Prime Steaks

Are they worth the Prime Price???

By: Celeste Stewart

When dining out at your finer dining establishments and steakhouses, you’ll likely encounter USDA Prime steaks. You’ll also notice that they are priced significantly higher than the other cuts of beef. What is USDA Prime and is it worth the price differential?

First, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspects and grades beef according to a scale of eight different levels of quality. If you guessed that USDA Prime is the top level, you are correct. This ultimate quality rating indicates a flavorful, juicy, and tender cut. Only two percent of all beef products earn the USDA Prime designation. With so few pieces of beef qualifying for the premier grade, it’s no wonder the price tag is so much higher.

One look at a Prime cut compared to a lesser quality grade such as Select and you will see a difference. The Prime beef features rich marbling. One bite and you’ll be won over as the beef melts in your mouth.

Where can you get a taste? You won’t likely find USDA Prime steaks at your local supermarket. Most of these steaks wind up at hotels and upscale restaurants. If you have a quality butcher nearby, you may be able to get your hands on a USDA Prime cut. Call ahead and see. Otherwise, plan on dining out.

Prime steaks lend themselves to grilling, roasting, and broiling using dry-heat techniques. When you dine out at a fine steakhouse, the chef’s know what they’re doing. They’ll start with the finest meat available and cook it to perfection. The upgrade to Prime is a real treat you’re sure to enjoy.

Yes, all that marbling that makes the steak so flavorful, tender, and juicy may go against your low-fat diet goals however you won’t be eating these steaks every day. If you’re concerned about the fat content, consider ordering a petite cut. You’ll cut out a few calories and shave the price a bit, all the while enjoying the finest beef money can buy.

The next time you are faced with the choice, consider splurging on USDA Prime at your favorite restaurant.
