Drive Green Without Driving Yourself Crazy!
While many of our day to day activities have an impact on the world around us, for most of us it is our cars that have the greatest carbon footprint. There is a strong scientific consensus that the burning of fossil fuels like gasoline contributes to global climate change, and it is important for every driver to make changes that will lessen that environmental impact.
There are of course many different ways to lessen your car’s impact on the environment. The most obvious method, of course, is to purchase a more fuel efficient vehicle but that will not always be possible. Few people will have the budget to go out and buy a new car simply to save on fuel, and it can take many years for the fuel savings alone to recoup the cost of a new set of wheels.
Fortunately for those on a budget there are other ways drivers can lessen their impact on the environment without severely impacting their lifestyle. By simply making some simple changes to their daily routine drivers can enjoy a greener future and a lower gas bill.
One of the simplest ways to save gas costs and lessen your impact on the environment is to carpool with one or more coworkers. If you were offered the chance to cut your monthly gasoline bill in half, you would jump at the opportunity. So why not gather a couple of friends and share the cost of commuting. You will save money on gas as well as wear and tear on your car.
If you live in a bike friendly area you may even want to ditch the car altogether and start commuting by bicycle. Riding a bike is a great way to get some exercise and fresh air, and a great way to save money on gas as well. If bicycling to work is not an option, consider your bike for short trips to the grocery store. Every little bit helps when it comes to saving the planet.
Don’t forget about the importance of keeping your current set of wheels in good running order. Not only will regular service and occasional tune-ups help avoid costly breakdowns but such service can also reduce fuel consumption. This reduced fuel consumption can pay for the cost of the maintenance, and help lessen your car’s impact on the environment as well.
We all know how important it is to combine errands whenever possible, so be sure to map out your route before you head out to work and shopping. Combining trips to the pharmacy, grocery store, department store and other destinations can significantly reduce the number of miles you drive each year, and that can greatly reduce your fuel costs and your carbon footprint.
We all know the bad news about global climate change, and many of the predictions are quite dire. The good news, however, is that each of us can make a significant impact simply by making some easy changes in our everyday lives. So consider carpooling, biking and other options and watch your fuel costs decline while your environmental consciousness soars.
