Home Security: Burglary Prevention Tips

Home burglary is a crime that affects millions of people world wide.  Home burglary is when someone enters your home with the intent to steal your belongings.  Most home burglars will choose their targets by assessing the level of security the home has installed, as well as the valuables they may have inside.  Thus, if you want to protect your home and belongings from burglars, an adequate home security system must be in place.  The following paragraphs will further discuss home burglary, as well as provide you with valuable tips and information to help with burglary prevention.

Know Your Neighbors

One of the best ways to help keep your home safe and secure when you are away is to know your neighbors.  If you have a good relationship with your neighbors, they will generally keep an eye on your house when you are not home.  Your neighbors, most generally, will alert you to any unusual activity, or strange people lurking around your home.  Knowing your neighbors, and maintaining a good relationship with them, can help boost your level of home burglary prevention, as well as home security.

Hiding the Key

Since home burglary is such a growing crime, it is no longer a good idea to hide your spare house key anywhere outside.  Home burglars have taken great pains to learn the most popular hiding spots for spare house keys, even going so far as to watch your home until they see where you getting your hidden key from.  Once they have access to that hidden key, burglarizing your home is a piece of cake.  Should you ever discover your house key is missing, you should immediately have your locks changed.

An Occupied Home

When your home is unoccupied, it makes it an easier target for burglars.  Burglars often seek out homes that are unoccupied.  For this reason, you should go to great lengths to ensure your home always appears as if someone is home.  Making your home look like someone is home if fairly simple.  Some of the steps you can take include:

  • Always leave a light on.
  • Have your neighbor grab your newspaper and mail when you are away.
  • Never leave your porch light on when you leave in the morning.

There are many other ways to make your home appear as if you are home.  By doing so, you are increasing your level of home security, and helping to prevent burglary.

A Protected Home

If your home is not protected, you have an increased chance of home burglary.  Burglars will most often select a home that is unprotected, causing the action of stealing your valuables an easier one.  Be sure that your  windows and doors are strong and secure and keep them shut and locked tight, especially when you are not at home.  If you have an entrance gate, keep it closed.  Never leave expensive tools and equipment unlocked.  They should be secured in a locked garage or shed.
